Alexandra Wendt

Alexandra writes fantasy novels inspired by historical settings. After graduating with a BA in English and art history, she made it to Florence, Italy. There, she pursued her MA in Italian Renaissance art with a focus on fifteenth-century Siena and Florence and pictorial representations of sainthood and mysticism. She now uses her degree to influence her stories.

Alexandra scrive romanzi fantasy ispirati dai periodi storici. Dopo essersi laureata con un BA in inglese e storia dell’arte, si è trasferita a Firenze. Lì ha studiato per un MA in arte rinascimentale italiana con una specializzazione nel quattrocento a Siena e Firenze e la rappresentazione pittorica della santità e del misticismo. Ora usa la sua laurea per influenzare le sue storie.

1. What genre(s) do you write?

I write fantasy inspired by historical settings, namely the late medieval/early Renaissance period and the Victorian period.

Scrivo romanzi fantasy ispirati a periodi storici, soprattutto medioevo/Rinascimento e quello Vittoriano.

2. Do you have a newly released novel? What is the title and a link to buy the novel?

My debut “clockpunk” novel, Of Constellations and Clockwork, was released last November!

4. How did you end up doing hybrid publishing?

It wasn’t necessarily a decision to seek out hybrid publishing as it was that I just so happened to find the right one at the right time. I was initially planning to traditionally publish, but I found out about Story-weaver Publishing through Instagram followers, and when I read their mission statement and what they were looking for, I was shocked. “That’s exactly my book that they want!” I knew then that I had to submit to them.

Non è ho voluto sin dall'inizio pubblicare con una casa editrice ibrida ma piuttosto ne ho trovata una giusta al momento giusto. Volevo pubblicare con una casa editrice tradizionale, ma ho trovato Story-weaver tramite Instagram e quando ho letto la loro dichiarazione di missione sapevo che avrei dovuto mandare il mio libro.

5. What do you like and dislike about hybrid publishing?

I like that I have pretty much all of the flexibility and control of self-publishing, but without the stress of it. There is so much involved with self-publishing; I don’t know how those authors handle it all. And it’s nice to have a built-in team to help me champion and market my book. As far as dislikes, I suppose the main one is that you don’t get to keep all royalties, and you don’t get quite the exposure you would with traditional publishing–but, at the same time, you get much higher royalties than you do with traditional publishing.

Mi piace la flessibilità di autopubblicazione, senza lo stress. Con l’autopubblicazione, c'è tantissimo da fare; non capisco come facciano gli altri autori, e’ davvero difficile. È bello anche avere una "squadra" per aiutarmi con il marketing. Per quanto riguarda le cose che non mi piacciono, è uno che non ritieni tutti i profitti del libro. Una casa editrice tradizionale può anche offrire più esposizione–però allo stesso tempo ritiene anche più profitti con una editrice ibrida che tradizionale.

6. What inspired you to start writing fantasy?

It’s something I’ve simply always loved to write. I’m not sure there’s a particular book that got me into it… If anything, the Magic Treehouse series comes to mind; that’s probably what drew me to exploring historical periods in fantasy!

È solo una cosa che mi piace da quando ero piccola. Non so se c’è un libro specifico che mi ha scatenato la voglia di scrivere fantasy forse la serie Magic Treehouse; probabilmente era quella che mi ha introdotto all’esplorazione dei periodi storici fantasy!

7. What is your favorite part of being an author?

My favorite part of being an author has been finding out people I haven’t talked to in a long while–and even complete strangers–have read my book! That probably sounds silly, but I think I initially didn’t expect to reach an audience much wider than my friends and family haha.

La cosa che mi piace di più dell’essere una scrittrice è che ho avuto l'opportunità di parlare con persone che non sentivo da tantissimo tempo che hanno letto il libro, e anche persone totalmente estranee! Forse sembra sciocco ma penso che all’inizio non mi aspettavo di raggiungere un pubblico più ampio che i miei amici e la famiglia, ahaha.

8. What do you do with your free time when you’re not writing?

I love reading, of course, and I have two little ones so I’m currently spending a lot of time with them. My husband and I also like watching movies together.

Mi piace leggere, ma al momento sto passando molto tempo con i miei due bimbi piccoli. Mi piace anche guardare i film con mio marito.

9. How long does it usually take you to finish a novel?

It depends a lot on my season of life and what it is I’m writing, but first drafts can take 5 to 6 months usually. Subsequent drafts though go much quicker. Of Constellations and Clockwork was begun in February 2021, and I submitted it to Story-weaver in August 2023.

Dipende molto dalla stagione della mia vita e quello che scrivo, ma le prime bozze di solito ci vogliono 5 o 6 mesi. Le bozze successive ci vogliono molto meno. Ho iniziato Of Constellations and Clockwork in febbraio 2021, e l’ho presentato a Story-weaver in agosto 2023.

10. What is the most fun and most difficult part of the writing process for you? Eg. first draft, editing, researching?

I think second drafts are my “sweet spot”. I have the story and characters mostly figured out by then, but I’m still mainly writing and not editing as much, which I prefer. The most difficult is probably the midpoint of the first draft–it’s always so tough.

Penso che la seconda bozza sia sempre la parte più divertente. Da allora conosco la storia e i personaggi ma sto ancora scrivendo, non modificando molto. La parte più difficile probabilmente è la metà della prima bozza.

11. Is Of Constellations and Clockwork part of a series or a standalone novel?

A series! As of now, there will be two books. Whether there will be more–in the world itself or with those specific characters–is still uncertain.

Una serie! presto, ci saranno due libri. Ancora non so se ci saranno di più, ambientati nel mondo del libro e/o con gli stessi personaggi.

12. Who is your favourite author/s? And why?

My top three are Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, and Dante (not only the Divine Comedy but also Vita Nova). These were the writers that inspired me as a teenager and got me interested in the historical periods I currently love.

Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, e Dante (non solo la Commedia, ma anche Vita Nova). Erano quelli che ho letto quando ero un adolescente e mi hanno fatto appassionare ai rispettivi periodi storici.

13. What is one book that profoundly impacted you as a writer, and why?

The Count of Monte Cristo! I was obsessed with the breadth of the story, the depth of the characters, and how masterfully everything tied together. It would be my dream to write something of that scope one day.

Il conte di Montecristo! Ero ossessionata dall’ampiezza della storia, la profondità dei personaggi, e con quanto maestria tutto è legato insieme. È un sogno quello di scrivere qualcosa di quella portata.

14. What is one characteristic of yourself that you gave Clemenza, your main character in Of Constellations and Clockwork?

Clemenza is very conflicted about what she believes in and struggles to align her values and actions, which is something that came directly from a difficult period in my life shortly before I wrote the book.

Clemenza è molto combattuta su ciò in cui crede e fa fatica ad allineare i suoi valori con le sue azioni, cosa che è venuta direttamente da un periodo difficile della mia vita.

15. What are two fun facts about you?

I have synesthesia, so I see colors for letters, numbers, and sounds. I also got to play the piano in Jane Austen’s house. :)

Ho la sinestesia, quindi vedo i colori per le lettere, i numeri, e i suoni. Ho anche suonato il pianoforte nella casa di Jane Austen. :)

16. If you could give any advice to a new writer/author, what would it be?

You don’t need all the time in the world and a perfect schedule to write. It’s hard, but you really can write a book with little chunks of time here and there. I finished and published Of Constellations and Clockwork during my first pregnancy and my son’s first year of life and am currently working on the sequel with two little ones! It’s hard but not impossible.

Non c’è bisogno di tutto il tempo nel mondo e l’orario perfetto per scrivere un romanzo. È difficile ma è possibile scrivere con piccoli pezzi di tempo. Ho finito e pubblicato Of Constellations and Clockwork durante la mia prima gravidanza e il primo anno del mio figlio. Al momento sto scrivendo la seconda con due bimbi! È difficile ma non è impossibile.
